Loewe SS25: Jonathan Anderson Blends Art, Fashion, and History in a Surreal Collection

Jonathan Anderson’s SS25 collection for Loewe seamlessly fuses art, history, and modernity. With bold references to classical figures like Mozart and Van Gogh, the show featured voluminous silhouettes, floral prints, and inventive accessories. Anderson’s vision continues to challenge the boundaries of fashion while celebrating life’s imitation of art.

Loewe SS25: Life Imitates Art in Jonathan Anderson's Bold Collection

For the Spring/Summer 2025 collection, Jonathan Anderson, creative director of Loewe, continued his tradition of blending fashion, art, and craftsmanship. Over the past decade, Anderson has redefined the brand, creating thought-provoking collections that challenge and inspire the fashion world. His latest offering, presented in the neutral, expansive setting of the Vincennes Castle in Paris, encapsulated his signature approach: a seamless balance of surrealism and wearability, where garments become coveted pieces of art.

The theme of the collection was heavily inspired by Oscar Wilde’s 1889 essay, which proposed the idea that "life imitates art much more than art imitates life." Anderson embraced this notion, infusing the collection with intellectual depth and layered references that invite the audience to decode the meaning behind each piece. The collection felt like a tribute to the beauty of art, life, and nature, reflected in both the intricate details and bold choices seen throughout the show.

A key motif throughout Anderson’s work is his exploration of structure and volume. This was evident in SS25, with billowing balloon dresses and bright, A-line babydolls featuring wire-trimmed ruffles that added a playful yet sophisticated flair to the runway. Drawing from historical inspirations, Anderson brought in elements from the 18th century, particularly the concept of "panier" or cage-like structures, which were used to give volume to skirts. These influences were presented with modern twists, transforming traditional silhouettes into contemporary works of art.

Floral prints, another recurring theme in Anderson’s collections, reappeared with a countryside charm, paying homage to nature’s beauty. The show’s classical influence extended to its printed t-shirts, which featured portraits of musical legends like Mozart, Chopin, and Bach, alongside art icons like Manet and still-life floral prints reminiscent of Van Gogh. This merging of classical music, art history, and fashion offered a rich dialogue between past and present, adding another layer of sophistication to the collection.

Accessories also played a central role, reinforcing the overall aesthetic. Loewe’s iconic Puzzle bag made its expected appearance, adding a touch of understated elegance to the collection. Footwear further highlighted Anderson’s ability to blend masculine and feminine elements, as models walked the runway in sleek, sockless derbies and the brand's distinctive wide-toed clogs, which were reimagined as nautical-inspired shoes. The shoes, much like the garments, embodied the creative tension between structure and fluidity, art and functionality.

The entire presentation was a reflection of Anderson’s vision for Loewe as a house that not only celebrates fashion but also views it as an intellectual and artistic pursuit. Each garment, accessory, and design element contributed to a larger narrative, where fashion serves as a medium for expressing life’s imitation of art.

Through the SS25 collection, Anderson reaffirmed his position as a forward-thinking designer who embraces the past while constantly pushing the boundaries of what fashion can be. His ability to merge high-concept ideas with practical wearability ensures that Loewe remains one of the most influential and innovative brands on the global fashion stage.
