CHARLIE XCX FEATURES BILLIE EILISH IN “GUESS” REMIX
Following the plot of the “brat” remixes, Charlie XCX dropped Guess featuring Billie Eilish, one of the singles from the deluxe version, and certainly a fan favorite that has been materialized into a pile of bras being climbed by both artists.
Rumors had been running around ever since Charlie XCX announced that another featuring was dropping in the following weeks, and fans had been speculating the different possibilities for a collaborator. First it was Caroline Polachek, the American singer and producer that, aside from creating one of 2023’s most versatile albums, posted a picture next to a brat subway poster in London referencing Lorde’s verse in the girl, so confusing: “I ride for you Charlie”.
Bb Trickz, a Spanish “emerging” urban singer, was also rumored as other likely possibility, following a brief teaser of the artist during the performance of Club Classics in Ibizia’s brat boiler room.
However, it was an earlier post by the creator of brat with only a day notice that almost completely unveiled that the new remix would feature Billie Eilish, a premise that fans worked out thanks to the artist’s rings appearing on the cover. Mirroring her previous remix, Guess ft Billie Eilish alters half of the original song by adding a verse that resembles part of the collaborator’s personality while preserving the demo’s essence.
Billie jumps into the song following her attitude in LUNCH, one her latest and most successful singles, in which she fantasizes about being in a sex-affective relationship with a girl. She joins Guess by being the receiver of Charlie’s verse and confidently acknowledging that she in fact doesn’t need to “guess” the color of her underwear, as she’s the one who bought it. Resulting in a fun, cocky, pretentious and sexy bop that blends Charlie’s electro and rave style with Billie’s almost whispered voice and delicacy.
The remix includes a music video lead by both artists climbing their way to the top of a pile of bras, following Billie Eilish crashing into Charlie’s house (the never-ending reference album). Additionally, both artists announced that all unworn underwear featured in the music video will be donated to “I SUPPORT THE GIRLS”, a non-profit organization for survivors of domestic violence.
The featuring of both artists is, however, rather rare, as Billie Eilish usually refuses to collaborate in other’s songs and has recently launched HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, a solo album with no collaborations further than the usual sister-brother dynamic with the producer and songwriter FINNEAS. Charlie XCX’s discography, and more specifically brat, has become a constant rave that has progressively shown fans and critics what the album was intended for in the first place.
Not only is it a result of tremendous producing and mastering, but also a big carefree summer hyper pop album to experiment with. All in all, an everlasting boiler room. However, the idea behind the “brat” project also includes massive pop culture references, not only through lyrics about generational trauma, but through remixes with random artists with whom Charlie has had some sort of "history".
First Lorde (her socalled “twin”), then Addison Rae (one of TikTok’s sweethearts), Robyn and Yung Lean (predicting a scandi summer), and lastly Billie, who has not only recently dropped one of the albums of the summer, but who is also one of the internet’s girlfriends and most acclaimed pop artists of the decade.
