From Grindr Match to Business Partners: The Brownstone Boys’ Journey in Brooklyn

Barry Bordelon and Jordan Slocum transformed a chance encounter into a thriving Brooklyn renovation business, the Brownstone Boys. Together, they’ve preserved historic brownstones and built a community-focused brand, celebrating both architectural heritage and their love story.

In the heart of Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, Barry Bordelon and Jordan Slocum are breathing new life into historic brownstones, merging architectural preservation with modern design. Known as the Brownstone Boys, their journey began with a simple connection on Grindr in 2017 and has since flourished into a thriving renovation business, a strong social media presence, and a love story deeply rooted in community and creativity.

When Barry and Jordan first connected online, neither expected that their casual conversation would lead to a future filled with shared goals and mutual passions. On April 4, 2017, the two struck up a chat on Grindr that quickly became something deeper. Their first date, a casual meetup at the Crown Inn in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, paved the way for what would become a committed relationship. They spent hours talking, revealing a shared love for architecture, design, and the cultural richness of Brooklyn.

Despite an early hiccup — Barry “ghosted” Jordan briefly due to complications around his background as a Jehovah’s Witness and his ongoing journey with coming out — they reconnected. Their bond quickly rekindled, with both discovering that their love for architecture could become the foundation of something much larger.

Seven months into their relationship, Barry and Jordan made a bold decision: they pooled their savings and purchased a 19th-century brownstone in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Barry, already experienced in home renovation, was eager to take on the project, though Jordan initially thought the process would take a year or more. Barry’s drive and knowledge of real estate hastened the timeline, and by October 2018, they had closed on their first brownstone together. This purchase marked the beginning of the Brownstone Boys. Barry moved in first, with Jordan joining him shortly after, and together they began an extensive renovation.

What started as a personal project quickly evolved into a brand. Barry and Jordan began documenting their journey on Instagram and YouTube, initially expecting only family and friends to tune in. However, as they shared their renovation experiences and techniques online, they attracted a much larger audience. Their detailed posts on preservation methods, renovation tips, and behind-the-scenes moments resonated widely, drawing in followers who appreciated both their expertise and approachable personalities.

Their platform soon became a resource for people interested in historical renovations. Followers began reaching out, not just for advice but with requests for help on their own home projects. This newfound demand led Barry and Jordan to take on their first client in 2019: a couple struggling to manage their own brownstone renovation. After coffee with the couple, Barry and Jordan agreed to help, marking their transition from hobbyists to professional renovation specialists.

The Brownstone Boys’ services became more and more sought after. By early 2020, Barry and Jordan had built a steady client base, giving them the confidence to leave their corporate jobs. Barry left a sales position at a software startup, while Jordan departed from his marketing and design role at an ice cream company. Together, they committed full-time to the Brownstone Boys.

Supporting Brooklyn’s diverse community is central to the Brownstone Boys’ mission. Their first clients were a young Black couple, and since then, Barry and Jordan have worked with generational families, LGBTQ homeowners, and first-time buyers, many of whom share a deep love for Brooklyn’s brownstones. This commitment to inclusivity has made them an integral part of the community, where their work goes beyond construction to foster relationships and strengthen neighborhood bonds.

As their business thrived, Barry and Jordan’s relationship grew stronger. Although they had achieved significant milestones in their professional lives, marriage wasn’t something they initially prioritized. Barry, coming from a Jehovah’s Witness background, had different perspectives on marriage compared to Jordan, who was raised in a liberal Jewish family. But as their lives became more intertwined, the idea of marriage gradually felt more meaningful.

The decision to marry came unexpectedly during a spontaneous trip to Puerto Rico in 2023. In a small, cozy restaurant called El Jibarito, they found themselves discussing marriage seriously for the first time. They decided that each would propose when the moment felt right. For Barry, that moment came on April 4, 2023, the five-year anniversary of their first Grindr message. He proposed to Jordan on the front stoop of their brownstone, a space filled with cherished memories of shared mornings and evenings.

Two months later, Jordan orchestrated a second, more public proposal during a House Beautiful video shoot, where he asked Barry to marry him as the final question of the interview. Barry’s response was an enthusiastic “yes,” marking a beautiful moment in their journey together.

In October 2023, Barry and Jordan celebrated their union with a wedding that reflected their love for Brooklyn and the community they had built around them. The ceremony took place on the stoop of their brownstone, with an officiant presiding over the intimate gathering. The couple then celebrated with a block party, inviting friends, neighbors, and clients to join in the festivities. The celebration had a Brooklyn Block Met Gala theme, blending style with a sense of local pride.

Barry and Jordan’s decision to host their wedding as a block party symbolized their commitment to community and inclusivity. Although Barry’s parents couldn’t attend, the couple’s open invitation allowed neighbors and friends alike to celebrate their love. Jordan summed it up, saying, “It was imperative for Barry and I for our wedding to feel like a love party,” emphasizing the bravery and openness that define their relationship and approach to life.

Since founding the Brownstone Boys, Barry and Jordan have become influential figures in the renovation world. They have written a book, appeared on HGTV and the Magnolia Network, and grown their social media following to nearly half a million. Despite their success, their dedication to Brooklyn’s architectural history and community-focused mission remains strong. Each project they undertake is an effort to preserve the unique charm of Brooklyn’s brownstones while making these spaces functional and beautiful for modern living.

Barry and Jordan’s journey from an unexpected Grindr match to business partners and finally, life partners, is a testament to the power of shared vision, creativity, and resilience. The Brownstone Boys have built a brand that’s much more than a business; it’s a community-centered endeavor that celebrates Brooklyn’s rich history while looking forward to its future. With each home they renovate, Barry and Jordan are leaving an indelible mark on the city they love, one brownstone at a time.

Their story is also an inspiring example for other entrepreneurs, especially within the LGBTQ community. Barry and Jordan have demonstrated that it’s possible to build a successful business rooted in personal passion, community, and collaboration. For them, Brooklyn is more than just a workplace — it’s a place to live, love, and contribute to a lasting legacy.

As they continue to grow their brand, the Brownstone Boys are setting a powerful example by combining hard work with authenticity and connection. Barry and Jordan’s approach to design and renovation invites people to rethink the spaces they inhabit, and their openness to engaging with diverse communities brings people together in ways that go beyond physical structures.

Their journey is one of love and commitment, not only to each other but also to the city they call home. Together, Barry and Jordan are creating something far more meaningful than renovated homes; they’re building a life filled with shared dreams, hard work, and the unbreakable bonds of community.

French Veterinary Psychiatrist Revolutionizes Feline Mental Health, Bridging Human Psychiatry with Cat Care

Joël Dehasse, a veterinary psychiatrist, applies human psychiatric techniques to treat cats' mental health. His approach includes cognitive-behavioral therapy and, in some cases, medication, sparking debate on animal well-being. Dehasse's work emphasizes understanding feline emotions, promoting better relationships between cats and their owners.

Joël Dehasse, a prominent French veterinary psychiatrist, has gained attention for his innovative approach to feline mental health, applying principles from human psychiatry to improve the well-being of cats. According to Dehasse, just like humans, cats can experience a range of mental disorders such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress. His work has raised awareness about these issues and promoted a greater understanding of feline behavior, which has sparked interest and, at the same time, controversy in the veterinary field and among pet owners.

For Dehasse, understanding cats' behavior requires an approach that includes therapeutic techniques tailored to their unique characteristics. Cognitive-behavioral therapy, for example, has been one of the strategies he has adapted for treating felines, allowing him to address problematic behavior patterns and work on their modification. In cases where behavioral therapies are insufficient, Dehasse considers the use of psychotropic medications to help cats manage their problems. However, this approach has sparked an ethical debate in the veterinary community and among pet owners, who question the limits and effectiveness of using drugs on animals.

Dehasse's work is not solely focused on treating behavioral issues; he also emphasizes improving the relationship between cats and their owners, helping pet owners to better understand their cats' body language and signals in order to identify mental health issues. According to Dehasse, careful observation of feline behavior can provide essential clues about their emotional state, which helps to create a more harmonious environment at home. The veterinarian asserts that by better understanding the mental and emotional needs of cats, it is possible to optimize their well-being and reduce problematic behaviors that often lead to conflicts between the animal and its owner.

This integrated approach to cats' mental health also raises questions about the ethical implications of treating animals with psychotropic drugs. Dehasse argues that, as in humans, mental well-being is a fundamental component of animals' overall health. However, he acknowledges that the use of medications should be moderate and justified, proposing that the physical and emotional well-being of the cat be evaluated in each case. This perspective suggests that treating mental health problems in cats should be accompanied by a holistic approach that encompasses both the physical and psychological aspects of the animal.

To advance in this area, Dehasse emphasizes the importance of ongoing research in veterinary psychiatry, as this emerging field still has a limited knowledge base. The study of animal mental health could open new avenues in veterinary medicine, enabling more effective and specialized treatment. His pioneering work has sparked a broader debate on the need to address animal mental health with the same seriousness as physical health.

In conclusion, Joël Dehasse's work in feline psychiatry has changed the way animal well-being is understood. His approach has highlighted the importance of caring for both the body and mind of cats, promoting a comprehensive perspective on pet care. This approach not only benefits cats but also contributes to improving relationships between animals and their owners, fostering a healthier and more respectful environment. Through his work, Dehasse has brought to the forefront the idea that animals, like people, have emotional needs that must be met, opening a new chapter in the study and care of animal mental health.

Emma Chamberlain Rethinks Social Media Fame, Pursues Business and Creative Freedom

Emma Chamberlain, famed YouTuber and internet personality, is stepping back from constant social media posting, focusing instead on her entrepreneurial ventures, including Chamberlain Coffee and a design collaboration with Warby Parker. She shares her struggles with social media pressures, striving to balance mental health and authenticity while embracing new professional goals outside the digital world.

Emma Chamberlain, once one of YouTube’s brightest stars, is now shifting her focus away from constant social media posting to pursue business ventures that align with her creative aspirations. Known for her relatable and self-deprecating humor, Emma moved to Los Angeles at 17 to grow her vlogging career. Now, at 23, she has 12 million subscribers on YouTube and 15 million followers on Instagram, yet she’s begun to question the endless pursuit of social media fame. While she’s built a solid reputation as a brand ambassador for companies like Louis Vuitton and Lancôme, Emma has also developed a strong personal brand that resonates with her Gen Z audience. However, the pressures and anxieties of social media stardom have led her to reduce her posting frequency and avoid platforms like TikTok entirely.

Emma’s recent ventures show a desire for more control over her career and life. In 2019, she launched Chamberlain Coffee and recently assumed the role of co-chief executive, allowing her to delve into retail strategy and fund-raising. Chamberlain Coffee has garnered impressive success, with Forbes estimating $20 million in revenue last year. In addition, she hosts a popular podcast called Anything Goes, where she discusses mental health, relationships, and the downsides of internet fame. Her podcast has become a platform for Emma to share her struggles, helping her connect with her audience on a deeper level.

fashion and art magazine

Emma’s journey highlights her complex relationship with fame. Although her public image reflects luxury and success, she has been candid about feeling depressed and isolated at times. She recalls feeling conflicted about the privilege and success she has achieved, while also grappling with anxiety and the constant scrutiny that comes with being a public figure. Emma has even adopted a "two-phone system" to limit her time on social media, a move aimed at preserving her mental health. One phone has essential apps like email, while the other, which she calls her "bad phone," is reserved for social media and is often left out of sight.

Recently, Emma has expanded her professional endeavors through a significant collaboration with Warby Parker. While her initial partnership with the eyewear brand involved selecting colors for existing frames, her latest collaboration saw her contributing ideas for frame shapes, lenses, and promotional imagery. This deeper involvement highlights her desire to transition from a mere brand ambassador to someone who plays an integral role in product development. Warby Parker executives praised her vision and noted that her collaboration has been one of their most successful campaigns to date.

fashion and art magazine

Emma’s evolving career path mirrors those of other YouTube personalities who have transitioned to new fields, moving beyond social media to build personal brands that resonate with their audiences. She views her journey as a way to redefine what success looks like in the influencer world. While some influencers capitalize on their popularity to expand into areas like fashion or wellness, Emma is looking for more substantial creative control, wanting her brand to be a true reflection of her personality rather than a platform for the ideas of others.

Reflecting on her future, Emma has considered other routes, even drawing inspiration from public figures like Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, who successfully transitioned from acting to luxury fashion with their brand, The Row. Still, she’s unsure of the exact path ahead, recognizing that her priorities have changed since her early days in Los Angeles. Emma’s recent road trip through Wyoming and Colorado with her father, a painter, gave her a chance to disconnect, reinforcing her desire to explore life beyond the digital world. Away from the phone and social media, she found a sense of peace and fulfillment, which she describes as “a dream come true.”

Emma Chamberlain’s story encapsulates the modern influencer’s dilemma: balancing personal well-being with the demands of social media and navigating a path from digital fame to meaningful entrepreneurship.

Couple's Love for John Fluevog Shoes Leads to Wedding at Fan Festival

Amber Walker and Ron Dutt wed at a Fluevog fan event, celebrating their love and shared passion for unique footwear. Their surprise ceremony inspired the Fluevog community and showcased the brand's influence on connection and creativity.

Amber Walker and Ron Dutt’s wedding was a unique celebration of their love for each other and their shared passion for John Fluevog’s distinctive shoe designs, which have inspired a devoted fan community known as the “Flummunity.” Their story blends romance, community, and creativity, culminating in a surprise wedding at the Flummunity Fest in Vancouver, British Columbia, where fans gather annually to celebrate their love for the brand’s iconic, artistic footwear.

Amber, 46, and Ron, 50, first connected in January 2023 on Match.com. They quickly bonded over shared values and a sense of comfort they felt around each other. Their first coffee date in New Westminster, a suburb near Amber’s home in Burnaby, stretched into a seven-hour outing, including stops at an artisan market, a doughnut shop, and an early dinner. By the end of that day, they knew they had found something special. Ron, a lead technician and foreman at an auto body franchise, and Amber, a professional development advisor at a Vancouver law firm, each brought unique passions and life experiences to their relationship, making their connection deeply fulfilling.

Though neither Amber nor Ron had previously been married, they felt a strong, immediate bond. Ron, who hadn’t initially intended to remarry, was captivated by Amber’s warmth and presence. The couple’s mutual love for Fluevog shoes, though not advertised on their dating profiles, soon became a focal point in their relationship. On one of their early dates, Ron introduced Amber to his personal “shoe sanctuary,” a closet filled with around 80 boxes of Fluevogs, mostly in shades of blue. To Ron, the shoes represented a way to express his individuality, from their bold colors to their unique designs.

For Amber, too, Fluevog shoes held special meaning. She bought her first pair early in her career at Fasken, a large law firm, as a statement of personal style and creativity. Despite the shoes costing half her monthly rent, she considered them essential “roommates” that showcased her sense of individuality in a conservative corporate environment. The Fluevogs became a symbol of freedom and self-expression for Amber, a feeling she found echoed in Ron’s enthusiasm.

Their mutual love for Fluevog shoes became an even bigger part of their relationship as they began documenting their courtship on the Flummunity Facebook page. Regular “shoefies”—selfies featuring only their shoes—showcased their weekly dates, and their growing presence on the page turned them into minor celebrities within the Fluevog community. Fans commented on their posts, rooting for their relationship and sharing in the joy of their unique romance. This virtual community provided a source of support and inspiration for Amber and Ron, who were touched by how their shared love story resonated with others.

Flummunity Fest, the annual fan-driven event celebrating Fluevog shoes, was started in 2018 as a gathering for enthusiasts to connect and celebrate their shared passion. Inspired by one of the company’s core beliefs—that every person is inherently creative—the event quickly grew into a larger festival hosted in various cities, including Toronto, Vancouver, and Portland. For Fluevog fans, the festival was more than a chance to shop for new shoes; it was a place to celebrate creativity, individuality, and community. The founder, John Fluevog, a prominent figure in the footwear industry, often made surprise appearances, turning the gatherings into an experience that felt personal and family-like.

Amber’s dream of a wedding at Flummunity Fest came about serendipitously. She awoke one morning in April 2023, vividly envisioning herself descending the stairs at the Fluevog flagship store in Gastown, Vancouver, in a wedding dress, meeting Ron at the bottom, surrounded by Fluevog fans. Initially, the couple had planned to elope in Las Vegas, as Amber was hesitant about a big wedding due to the recent loss of her mother and brother. However, the dream was so powerful that they decided to make it a reality, enlisting the help of John Fluevog himself, who enthusiastically agreed to officiate their secret wedding during the October Flummunity Fest.

The festival, held on October 19, 2023, was a lively, colorful event that brought Fluevog fans together from all over. Amid displays of Fluevog’s signature shoes, tattoo artists, and even a glittering aerialist performance, guests reveled in their shared passion for the brand. Fashion designer Anna Sui, who had collaborated with Fluevog on limited edition pieces, commented on the joyful, almost theatrical atmosphere, likening it to the glam rock era when people dressed up to impress each other. This sense of unity and celebration was evident, with attendees taking pride in their outfits and rediscovering old Fluevog styles, feeling a renewed connection to their beloved footwear.

Amber and Ron’s wedding took place during the final morning of the festival at a historic Vancouver landmark, The Permanent, formerly home to the Bank of Canada. In a dramatic reveal, John Fluevog and his wife, Ruth, entered the venue and walked up the aisle, taking the stage as an acoustic guitarist played “I Get to Love You” by Ruelle. Guests watched in awe as Ron, dressed in a custom purple velvet suit with chrome Luciano shoes, took his place, and Amber followed, looking radiant in a retro-style lace dress, birdcage veil, and limited edition Zenith wedding boots.

Fluevog officiated the ceremony with warmth and humor, celebrating the couple’s love in the presence of the Flummunity. His words emphasized the value of community and the importance of finding love and acceptance among like-minded individuals. After exchanging rings, Amber and Ron were pronounced married in the eyes of their Fluevog family. The ceremony encapsulated the sense of belonging and creativity that had brought the couple together, reflecting the brand’s ethos of celebrating individuality.

Later that day, a legal ceremony was held at the Fluevog flagship store, attended by close friends and family, where a marriage commissioner from British Columbia officiated their union. The couple’s wedding was a joyful, fulfilling conclusion to their year-long romance, which had blossomed from a shared love of unique footwear into a deep, meaningful partnership.

Reflecting on the experience, both Amber and Ron felt a renewed sense of purpose and joy. For Amber, who had faced personal losses and grief in recent years, the wedding was a chance to find happiness and connection again. “It’s nice to feel some sparkle again,” she said, attributing much of her newfound joy to both Ron and the supportive Fluevog community. Ron echoed her sentiment, describing the wedding as the fulfillment of a dream he had never anticipated, one that made him feel complete and connected in a way he hadn’t experienced before.

Their love story and unique wedding at Flummunity Fest continue to inspire others in the community, reminding fans that love, creativity, and connection are possible in even the most unexpected places. For Amber and Ron, Fluevog shoes are more than just footwear—they’re a symbol of individuality, freedom, and the transformative power of community, values that lie at the heart of their relationship and their journey together.

Monique Knowlton, Iconic ’60s Model and Bold Gallerist, Leaves Legacy at 87

Monique Knowlton, celebrated for her '60s modeling and daring art gallery, passed at 87. Known for challenging conventions, her eclectic gallery featured emerging artists and provocative pieces. Her legacy endures in both fashion and contemporary art.

Monique Knowlton, a former '60s model turned provocative gallerist, left an indelible mark on both the fashion and art worlds. Born Monica Maria Clara Graebener in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1937, Knowlton’s early years were marked by privilege and exposure to cosmopolitan influences. At age 9, she attended boarding school in England and Switzerland, experiences that shaped her refined, international outlook. By 17, she had moved to Paris, where she initially worked as a translator. There, she married Francois LeFebre, her first husband, and began modeling to support her family after her husband failed to provide financially.

With the name "Monique Chevalier," Knowlton’s modeling career took off when she was scouted by Eileen Ford of Ford Models. She moved to New York, where she soon became a celebrated cover girl, gracing the pages of Vogue and modeling for renowned photographers such as Irving Penn and Bert Stern. Known for her sophisticated allure and knowing smile, Knowlton brought her unique flair to high fashion and was featured in advertisements for major brands like Revlon, Avon, and Max Factor. She became an iconic face of early '60s fashion photography, working with legends of the field and embodying the refined, playful ethos of the era’s "Mad Men" style.

In 1976, after retiring from modeling, Knowlton transitioned to the art world by opening the Monique Knowlton Gallery in SoHo, New York. This shift was not only a career pivot but also a reassertion of her identity beyond beauty and fashion. Her gallery, an eclectic space showcasing diverse and provocative works, quickly became a fixture in the city’s art scene. Guided by her mentor Serge Sabarsky, a specialist in German and Austrian Expressionists, Knowlton created a unique gallery environment that was inclusive, whimsical, and challenging. She displayed everything from assemblages by Betye Saar to vibrant doll-like sculptures by Phyllis Bramson, along with works by modernist painters like Marsden Hartley.

Knowlton’s gallery embodied her anti-elitist approach to art, which prioritized originality and defied New York's conventional art trends. Critic John Russell praised her gallery as a "hospitable haven" for eccentric and outrageous art. Knowlton organized shows that showcased the full spectrum of human expression and experience, including a notable 1983 exhibit titled Intoxication, curated by Lebanese artist Nicolas Moufarrege. Featuring over 100 artists, including icons like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and an 11-year-old graffiti artist known as On 2, the exhibition drew praise for capturing the dynamic and raw nature of the New York art scene.

A passionate supporter of young and emerging artists, Knowlton gave many creatives their first major exposure. Alison Saar, daughter of Betye Saar, had her debut New York show at Knowlton's gallery in 1984. She recalls Knowlton’s openness to unconventional art and her willingness to promote innovative talents, noting that the gallery’s atmosphere was refreshingly detached from the city’s art world constraints.

Knowlton’s personal life was as layered as her professional pursuits. She married multiple times, often to prominent figures, including investment banker Hugh Knowlton and lawyer William S. Sterns. Her family life was marked by both joy and tragedy. Knowlton lost her daughter Stephanie Chevalier in a car accident in 1977 and another daughter, Kathryn Knowlton, in 2014. Despite these hardships, she remained a devoted mother and continued to support her children and family.

Her art collection reflected her own values and interests. Knowlton amassed a significant collection of contemporary works and vintage toys, preferring pieces that challenged viewers or captured life’s darker elements. She owned striking pieces by photojournalists James Nachtwey and Sebastião Salgado, whose works documented global conflicts and injustices. These images, often unsettling, were a testament to Knowlton’s belief that one should not "look away" from suffering. The experience of growing up in post-World War II Europe deeply influenced her sense of responsibility toward acknowledging difficult truths.

After moving her gallery to Kent, Connecticut, for a brief period in the 1990s, Knowlton ultimately returned to New York, reopening in SoHo until the early 2000s, when she closed it permanently. Her legacy lives on through the artists she championed, her influence on the art community, and her fearless approach to style and expression. Known for her intellect, charisma, and passion for art that defied norms, Monique Knowlton's life encapsulates an era of vibrant creativity and unapologetic individuality.
