Drummies: Alice Mann Showcases Empowerment of South African Drum Majorettes

Alice Mann’s "Drummies" series highlights the resilience and pride of South African drum majorettes, portraying young women from underprivileged communities. Through striking photography, Mann explores femininity, empowerment, and challenges traditional, male-dominated narratives.

"Drummies" is a photography series by South African photographer Alice Mann, showcasing the empowerment and resilience of young drum majorettes from schools in the Western Cape and Gauteng. The series, which was previewed at the David Hill Gallery in London on September 19, 2024, is Mann's first solo exhibition in the UK. The collection captures the spirit, strength, and confidence of young girls, many of whom grow up in challenging environments where opportunities for women are scarce. Through "Drummies," Mann emphasizes the power and pride these girls embody, despite the socio-economic difficulties they face.

Mann’s series is not only visually stunning but also carries a deep social message. These images represent more than just portraits; they reflect the complexity of femininity and empowerment in a modern context. The drum majorette culture in South Africa, while largely seen as a light-hearted extracurricular activity, serves as a vehicle for these young women to express themselves, build confidence, and gain a sense of accomplishment. Mann captures these moments of transformation in her photography, offering viewers a nuanced perspective on what it means to be a young woman navigating societal challenges.

Art historian Christine Eyene, who has spoken about the series, highlights how Mann has a remarkable ability to connect with her subjects. This personal connection is evident in the intimate and authentic nature of her portraits, which manage to communicate both individual identity and collective strength. Mann’s ability to transcend age and background to engage with her subjects on a personal level is a significant reason for the emotional depth present in "Drummies."

Alice Mann, at just 27 years old, has already made history. She was the first photographer to win the prestigious Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize for a series, submitting four individual portraits of the drum majorettes. This recognition highlights her talent for capturing the human spirit in her work. The series has also been exhibited internationally in cities such as New York, Paris, and Johannesburg, solidifying Mann's place as an emerging voice in the global photography scene.

The London exhibition at the David Hill Gallery features 19 images from the "Drummies" series, including both previously unprinted works and entirely new pieces that had not been seen before. The exhibition will run until November 30, 2024, offering visitors a chance to explore Mann's unique perspective on femininity, empowerment, and representation.

Mann herself has spoken about the importance of diversifying the way we view subjects in photography. She notes that much of the imagery we see comes from a Eurocentric, male-dominated viewpoint, and her work seeks to broaden this perspective by offering a more inclusive and nuanced portrayal of her subjects. By focusing on young women from communities that are often overlooked, Mann’s "Drummies" contributes to a broader conversation about representation, diversity, and the power of the female gaze in contemporary art.

Drummies is on view from 20 Sept to 30 November at @davidhill_photo in collaboration with @afronovagallery
