Kendrick Lamar has once again put himself at the forefront of hip-hop with the release of his latest music video, “Not Like Us.” Dropping on July 4, the visual serves as a follow-up to his chart-topping diss track, cementing his ongoing rivalry with fellow rapper Drake.
Co-directed by Lamar and longtime collaborator Dave Free, the video kicks off with a captivating freestyle. Lamar then takes viewers on a tour of his Compton roots, celebrating his success with producer DJ Mustard and a throng of ecstatic fans. Iconic local spots such as city hall and Tam’s Burgers serve as backdrops, painting a vivid picture of community and triumph.
A notable highlight of the video is the inclusion of Lamar’s fiancée, Whitney Alford, and their two children, who join in the festivities. This family-centric portrayal adds a personal touch to the otherwise aggressive track, showcasing a different side of the Compton rapper.
Lamar’s video is laden with symbolism, especially aimed at Drake and his OVO label. Owls, the emblem of OVO, make frequent appearances. At one point, Lamar is seen attacking an owl piñata, while a cheeky disclaimer reassures viewers that “no OVHoes were harmed during the making of this video.” The video concludes with a powerful image of an owl in a cage, further driving home the message of Lamar’s dominance in this ongoing feud.
The video shoot took place in late June, just days after Lamar’s energetic performance at the Juneteenth “Pop Out” concert. At this event, he performed “Not Like Us” six times, much to the delight of the audience. The Los Angeles Times reported that the shoot attracted a number of high-profile fans, including musicians Steve Lacy, YG, Thundercat, and Roddy Ricch, as well as NBA star DeMar DeRozan, who gets a shoutout in the track.
As the music community awaits Drake’s response, one thing is clear: Kendrick Lamar has solidified his position as a master of lyrical warfare and a champion of his hometown. With “Not Like Us,” he not only takes a victory lap but also sets the stage for what could be another intense chapter in his storied career.
For now, fans and critics alike can enjoy the spectacle and artistry of one of hip-hop’s greatest talents at the peak of his powers.
